Baking Away The Blues

Baking Away The Blues

Feeling kind of blah today. I looked in my cabinet and saw I had some pecans, so I decided to make pecan pie. Never made it before and it surprisingly simple. Now I am eating a piece of pie while watching Atonement on DVD.

Still a bit blue ... but it will pass.

4 Your Enjoyment

Today marks the 4th year of my blog. I can't believe I am still making posts. I thought I would have given up on this years ago. Fortunately, this little space allows me to express myself openly and process my thoughts. It has really help me through some tough times.

Here's to another 4 years.

Just Friends

About a month ago, I met a really nice guy -- ML. But as of yesterday we ended our relationship ... and I couldn't be happier.

We were compatible in so many ways, but there were a few flaws that we saw in each other that we tried to ignore. As much as we tried to ignore them, the flaws were going to remain. We pressed on thinking things will change, but in reality we should have realized that a relationship between us would not worked. We should have been just friends. Unfortunately, there had to be some drama in order for this blessing in disguise to be revealed.

Luckily, our relationship was mainly platonic, so hopefully the weirdness can be kept to a minimum. The best times we had were just sitting around watching TV or a movie, so hopefully we can get back to that without any further drama.

The Illogical Mike Huckabee

I watched Mike Huckabee's interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and I have to say that I don't get Huckabee's logic. Watch the interview:

Huckabee seems to be boil things down to its simplest form to make his arguments. He is against the bailout of the automakers in US because he doesn't want congress making cars, even though Congress is only lending money and not taking part in the design or manufacturing process. But what really gets me is that he thinks same-sex marriage should not be allowed because anatomically it doesn't make sense and marriage should used to make the next generation.

Seriously?

So is he against abortion because it doesn't allow the propagation of the humans? If that is the case, then he should for all for same-sex marriage and gay adoption. Here's why: a same-sex couple is not capable of having children "naturally" so there will never been the need for an abortion; a fetus that would have been aborted could be adopted by a same-sex couple or gay person thereby making Pro-Lifers happy and creating the next generation. Everyone wins ... right?

Huckabee also tries to make the argument that since he's against same-sex marriage, doesn't mean he is homophobic. But to me, this is the equivalent of saying, "I am not a racist, but I don't want Black people living in my neighborhood." It could have been worst -- he could have said that he's not homophobic because he has a gay best friend.

The heart of the same-sex marriage debates is the use of the word 'marriage'. I feel that if we just change the wording and just called Civil Unions, and it gave all the rights of marriage on the the state and federal level, what is the big deal?I know it may feel like it's a separate but equal way of thinking, but when is anything really equal?

Mike Huckabee on the show to talk about his book which, by his own admission, is about how you should treat people the way you would like to be treated. I think he should make an addendum stating this only applies to those who believe in what I do ... because this is what his words imply.

Anyway ... I will get off my soapbox now.

Netflix on TiVo

This past weekend I got a TiVo Fall Update, but I wasn't sure what it was supposed to contain. I've been hearing that Netflix would be coming with the update but after looking for the option, it wasn't to be found. After reading some tech blogs yesterday I found the option only to discover that the media servers were undergoing maintenance and it could be accessed. GRR!

This morning I tried to give it another go, and it successfully worked. I have been trying to use my Playstation 3 to play Netflix streaming movies, but having been successfully because of some changes made by Netflix to enable Apple computer users to access the streaming movies.

To test it out, I re-watched a portion of a documentary I saw over the weekend (Bigger Stronger Faster*) and was amazed by how good it looked. The picture quality is better than I thought it would be. I with some movies it is suppose to stream in HD, but haven't fully tested the new software.

I have now loaded up my Instant Queue on Netflix and I am ready roll. You may not hear from me for a while because I will be adding a new dent to my couch.

The Biggest Compliment

The past Saturday was my tennis groups holiday party. I decided to bring my momma's "mac n' cheese" to the party and wow the crowd with my culinary skills. I made the dish a couple of hours after before the party and during preparation I thought that I made too much. If it was too much, then I would just take the remainder home.

But there was a problem ....

... apparently, I didn't make enough.

Movies: Sycendoche, New Yorl; Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom; Slumdog Millionaire

I saw a couple of movies over the past week, so I start off with the best and work my way down the worst.

Slumdog Millionaire

The movies about a young man's life and how he ends on the India version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." The questions from the show are answered from the flashbacks from his life as a boy. There some twists, but I will refrain from mentioning them. I highly recommend this movie.

Synecdoche, New York

I don't even know how to describe this movie because I only saw it once. To truly understand what was going on it has to be seen at least two times. Read Roger Ebert's review.

Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom

I watched this badly acted show on Logo, and was wondering how they were going to take that and make a movie. To their credit, they took badly acted TV show and made an equally bad movie that borders on being camp. The plot is so unbelievably contrived that there is so much drama happening at one time, but it's able to be resolved by the end of the movie. It's one of those movies that you have to force yourself to divorce yourself from reality to enjoy. The best thing about the movie for me was sitting the plush couches. YMMV.
