What American Accent Do You Have?
I found this quiz on a blog called Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery what gauge what American accent you may have. I am from Syracuse, NY, and whenever I traveled west to Geneva, NY, to visit family or when I went to school in Buffalo, NY, I noticed that people spoke a bit differently. I took a linguistics class junior year of college and began to learn about accents and dialects that exist(ed) in the United States. But, what type of accent do I have?
Here is my result:
Apparently, I have no accent but I do find myself slipping into a more southern cadence every now and again. I think is mostly due in part of my dad being from Mississippi. I love the word "y'all" but it is a constant struggle whether or not I should use it. I want to be proper and "you all" but if I am being more informal I would just say "y'all." It's easier.
I found another quiz called "Are You a Yankee or a Rebel?" and I was surprised when I scores were computed.
One of the questions I was asked: "What is that bubbly carbonated drink called?"
I would say 'soda' because anything else I would consider to be wrong. But if I were in the Finger Lakes Region or Western New York (Geneva, Rochester, Buffalo), I would be wrong because correct responds would be 'pop'. I can't fully express how much I hate the word 'pop'. If someone referred to a can of Sprite as 'pop', I would look at that person like they had five arms. It's that serious.

What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Midland "You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio. | |

My American accent: The West (which seems surprising as an Eastern Canadian), but then, it tells me I don't really have an accent at all.
This seems less surprising:
33% Dixie. You are definitely a Yankee.
Thank God!
